Easy way to get great flavor July 16, 2010 Norseman The "Old Smokey Electric Smoker" is "Three Martini Idiot" proof! I have used this smoker for steak, tri-tip, pork chops, beer butt chicken, and more. It is easy to set up in preparation for use, and once the switch is turned on it is time for cocktails. The only attention this unit requires while dinner is smoking/cooking is to adjust the temperature.
Old Smokey Works Great June 30, 2010 Big Iron (Arizona) I have used the Old Smokey to cook a pork shoulder, chicken, and beef ribs. The shoulder and chicken turned out great, and my wife says this is the best chicken she's ever eaten. The ribs didn't turn out as well because I cooked them way too fast and was in a hurry. Like someone said, the Old Smokey isn't a chef. I purchased it after reading the reviews here on Amazon. A friend of mine has the Big Green Egg, and another friend has an electric smoker which didn't get as good reviews as the Old Smokey. Both of these guys can make great tasting bbq, so I'm starting to think it's more the chef than the equipment. Get to know your equipment and then the rest is whatever meat, rubs, etc you use, and the cook time/temp. The Old Smokey retains all of the smoke since it's sealed, so your neighbors won't be able to smell the wonderful bbq smoke while you are cooking. But then, I think the meat stays more moist. I asked my friend with the Big Green Egg how he keeps the meat moist and he said he has to inject the meat.
I like that it is so simple in design. It was very easy to assemble, although I substituted split washers on the inside, and put the flat washers on the outside. I haven't had to clean it yet, but it seems that it would be easier to clean if the heating element was removable. Evidently this is a very old, tested design and you would do well to buy one of these. Also, I didn't want the investment of a Big Green Egg or even a Smokey Mountain (Weber) until I see if I would really use this. Now that I have one, I'm wondering why I would buy another one at all since this one works so well (so far).
What a waste of Time, Money and Meat May 25, 2010 J. R. Ronge (Milwaukee) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Wow I bought this thing after my Brinkman electric smoker finally died. Wish I would have stuck with Brinkman. This thing only actually smokes if you set it on high. If you try to regulate the temperature to about 200-225 for smoking the chips no longer smoke because it gets no air. And if you leave it on high to get smoke then everything cooks to fast and is tough.DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY PEOPLE...You can get a Brinkman electric smoker that actually works at 1/2 the price. These smokers really are junk....
Old Smokey Electric Smoker April 19, 2010 Kenneth L. Williams (Copperas Cove, TX) This is my second purchase of an Old Smokey Electric Smoker. The first one just had to be replaced because of neglect on my part. Works very well on anything you'd want to smoke year round. I'd recommend installing a thermometer in the lid to better control your cooking temperatures.
good product for the $ February 23, 2010 Jason Walker (OR, USA) The old smokey smoker is a great product for the price range, while it can't hold large amounts of meat (i.e doing deer or elk meat, pepperoni, sausage,)its great for doing roasts and maybe few strips of jerky and even did some baby back ribs which turned out awesome. The one thing that would dramatically improve this smoker would be a bottom door along with a damper to allow air inside, that way you could add more wood chips without having to take out both racks and drip pan, and get more smoke going into your meat. Once again for 122$ and being very simple to put together and very easy to use this smoker is already coming close to replacing the bbq, I just can't wait to see how a turkey comes out. If you are looking for a smoker under 200$ that doesn't require charcoal or propane and doesn't require a whole forest of wood to add smoke flavor, this is your best bet, whats even better is that fact that this smoker can reach near 350 degrees so if your in a hurry its near oven capable. Overall great product.
