5 out of 5 stars Perfect Sized Grill for Four   August 24, 2010
D. Connally (Northern VA)
First, I bought this grill at home depot, so it came with the cast iron grills/grates. If the one you're looking at doesn't have these, stop looking at it, go to home depot, and look at theirs (they should have cast iron grills that come with it, most other stores won't offer this). It shouldn't cost you any extra, and the upgraded parts are worth ~$40.

This is a quality grill, but comes at a higher price than most other large and shiny grills offered at large box stores. To someone who doesn't know better, it looks out-classed by similar priced, fancier, larger, stainless steel grills sold at approximately the same price, or even cheaper. However, it would be a mistake to simply write this grill off because it doesn't look as good. It's a good product made and backed by a good company. It'll last you 10+ years, provide you high and even heat, and replacement parts can be found and installed without much effort. That may not sound like a lot now, but a few years down the road you'll appreciate these qualities. You'll also feel a bit smug when your friend buys his fancy new grill but can't maintain 450 degrees F to put a sear on the steaks (although you may not appreciate the fact that his steaks took longer to cook and came out a bit tough) and he has to buy a new grill in 4 years because his is falling apart and he can't find replacement parts.

My biggest concerns regarding this particular model were it's size and the fact that it only had two burners. Both concerns turned out to be non-issues. It's size is enough to cook steaks/chicken/burgers for at least 4 people comfortably (and could easily do 6, although with vegetables the space might start to get tight). If you feel like you'll be cooking for more than 4 regularly, then consider a larger model. Having said that, I can cook 10 burgers at the same time without a problem and have BBQed for 12 without wishing for anymore grill. I think most families would find this size to be more than sufficient, although with all the larger grills out there it might seem under sized at first glance.

As for the two burners, I was concerned it might not provide enough heat and I'd be compromising with direct/indirect heat. First, the grill gets up to 500 F easily, and with the cast iron grates, it holds and distributes that heat well. You won't get that out of a cheaper grill (my friend is lucky to keep 350 with his). If I want direct heat, I put the food over a burner, if I want indirect heat, I put it on the top rack. Usually I just cook everything in the middle of the grill with the top shut, and that seems to work pretty good. At high heat, just about everything cooks great at 4 - 5 minutes per side (burgers, chicken, steak, pork, vegetables).

Something not to be overlooked is Weber's customer service. When I received my grill, it was damaged (one of the doors were banged up). I just called Weber, sent them a picture of the door, and they had another one at my house in two days. They are known for their customer service, and it's apparent to me that they deserve this reputation.

Overall, 6 months later and at least 50 uses in, I'm still happy with my purchase and wouldn't change my purchase (I can hardly ever say that...). My father has one of the older models (12+ years old) and it's still kicking out great food a few times a week. I think he's had to replace the igniter switch and maybe the burners once in all that time. Personally, I think this grill hits the sweet spot between cost and quality for my uses. The only time I would not recommend this grill is if you cook for 5 or more people frequently. It'll do just fine more often than not for 6 people, but if you're doing it all the time, you might appreciate the extra space.

4 out of 5 stars Tricky to assemble, easy to use   August 7, 2010

This grill was unexpectedly tricky to assemble in terms of the number of parts, the number of similar parts, and general 3-dimensional visualization. After it was assembled and hooked up to a gas tank, though, it was a breeze and a real pleasure to use. We use it at least once a week now to grill everything from burgers to veggies to fish, and we haven't had a single problem yet.

Definitely recommended!

2 out of 5 stars Expensive but not necessarily better   July 27, 2010

I was tired of replacing my cheap grills every other year so decided after reading the reviews to buy this Webber grill. I like the way it heats up fast but it doesn't seem any sturdier than my cheaper grills. The worst part of it is the grill. It sounded like it should be so easy to clean but it isn't. I oil them before use and have tried washing them as soon as they cool down. When that didn't work I tried letting them soak in hot soapy water. I finally found a cheap replacement grill at Walmart. That works but it is really disappointing to need to do that. Not when you pay $400.00 for a grill.

I purchased this grill as a door prize give away for a client fund raiser. I was notified of the winner on a Tuesday, late morning. I ordered it online from Amazon and did not pay anything extra for faster shipping. The person who won the grill called me Thursday morning ecstatic that the grill was sitting in his garage. One and a half days after I ordered it! The grill is Webers entry line and worth every penny I spent. Did I say that I too own a Weber Spirit grill? I have has it for several years and love it.

very well made grill just wish that the gas control was side to side and not front and back. would be better if you could just use one side of the grill but other than that am happy
